A few months ago, headlines lit up with an MIT study claiming ChatGPT reduces brain activity by 55% and creates “cognitive debt.” The clickbait takeaway: AI is rotting our brains. AI skeptics rejoiced. Leaders braced for another “tech is killing us” debate.
I dug into the research. What I found was not proof that AI is making us stupid, but proof that if you drop a powerful tool into the hands of untrained users, you shouldn’t be surprised when the results are underwhelming.
The bigger story isn’t about this study. It’s about a dangerous misconception spreading through boardrooms and breakrooms: that AI will naturally make people lazy, sloppy thinkers. My experience implementing AI in real organizations says otherwise. Used right, AI can make people sharper, faster, and better decision-makers than they’ve ever been.
The question isn’t “Will AI make us dumber?” It’s “Will we implement AI in a way that makes us smarter?”
The Flawed Science Behind the Scary Headline

- Session length: Each participant wrote 20-minute essays. That’s not how anyone uses AI at work. In the field, AI-supported work unfolds over hours, days, or weeks, with iteration and feedback.
- Training: Participants were told, in effect, “Here’s ChatGPT. Go write.” No prompt engineering tips. No strategy. No workflow integration. It’s like giving a scalpel to someone who’s never studied anatomy and concluding scalpels don’t improve surgery.
- Measurement method: EEG brain scans. Useful, but blunt. It’s like trying to evaluate a symphony while listening through a wall.
The most interesting finding wasn’t the “55% reduced brain activity” figure. It was this: students who started with “brain-only” writing and later used ChatGPT outperformed those who began with AI. That’s a roadmap for effective use—human cognition first, AI amplification second.
We’ve Seen This Movie Before
If I ran the same experiment with calculators, brain scans would probably show less neural activity during multiplication. That doesn’t mean calculators make us worse at math. It means they free our mental bandwidth to focus on higher-order problems.

I’ve yet to see AI inherently diminish a capable team. But I’ve watched poor implementation erode judgment, motivation, and quality in months. The difference is design.
The future belongs to teams who can think critically and leverage AI fluently. Not one or the other—both, working in concert.
